Angelina Jolie turns 40 today (4 June) and the Hollywood actress has certainly had an eventful four decades.
From winning an Academy Award when she was just 25 years old, to becoming a mother of six, to earning herself a damehood, there have been many milestones in Jolie's life worth commemorating.
To celebrate her birthday, IBTimes UK takes a look back at mere snippets of the iconic actress's life in pictures.
Jolie won the Golden Globe for best performance by an actress in a mini-series or motion picture made for TV in 1999 for her role as real-life, troubled model Gia Carangi in the movie, Gia.

Following on from the Golden Globes, Jolie won the Academy Award for best actress in a supporting role in 2000. She won for her portrayal of Lisa in James Mangold's Girl, Interrupted

After just two months of dating, Jolie married actor Billy Bob Thornton in May 2000 in Las Vegas. The pairing was constantly labelled as controversial, and not just because of the 19-year age gap. The couple engaged in frequent public displays of affection and confessing to wearing vials around their necks containing the other one's blood. In March 2002, they announced that they would be adopting a child from Cambodia together but abruptly split three months later.

A passionate human rights campaigner, Jolie was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 2001.

Despite appearing in many films, and earning herself high praise at award ceremonies, one of Jolie's most talked about performances was when she portrayed Lara Croft in 2001's Tomb Raider and the 2003 sequel. Both movies were considered commercial flops and were panned by critics.
