A worker at the Houses of Parliament has been arrested on suspicion of helping protesters to stage a rooftop protest at Westminster to demonstrate against Heathrow's expansion, police said on Friday.

The 26-year-old, who has worked for at least one MP and one peer, was held at his Westminster home and questioned at a central London police station.

He was arrested for aiding and abetting a criminal offence of trespass under the Serious Organised Crime and Police Act 2005, Scotland Yard said. He has not been named.

Three men and two women from the "Plane Stupid" group spent around two hours on the Commons roof on Wednesday after hanging banners down the side of the building.

They were arrested for trespass and bailed to report to police in April, pending further inquiries.

The demonstration followed another serious security breach on Monday when Greenpeace activists climbed on top of an aircraft at Heathrow and wrapped a banner around its tailfin.

The government, business groups, airlines and airport owner BAA say Heathrow must either expand or risk losing out to continental rivals serving emerging destinations.

But environmental groups have joined forces with local residents, saying that roughly doubling the number of flights from Britain's busiest air hub would make a mockery of government pledges to reduce carbon emissions.
