Dalglish Lauds Iconic Trio And Looks Forward To Carling Cup
Kenny Dalglish is concentrating on this weekend's Carling Cup match up
Kenny Dalglish is refusing to get carried away after Liverpool beat Brighton 6-1 last night to progress to the FA Cup quarter finals, with the Reds' manager concentrating on one Cup competition at a time.
This Sunday Liverpool face Cardiff in the Carling Cup final, and the Merseyside club will be looking to end a six-year trophyless run.
And though Dalglish was particularly pleased with his side's display yesterday, with Andy Carroll in particular looking closer than ever to hitting his stride, the Glaswegian insisted that he would be making the sure the squad understand that it's this weekend's match that they need to be focusing on.
"Defeating Brighton has got us to the next round, but it doesn't really help us in the Carling Cup," he told the BBC.
"We've got a cup final but we won't get carried away."
The match-up yesterday was the first time since Carroll and Luis Suarez were purchased by Liverpool last January that the pair have started alongside Steven Gerrard, who has suffered from ongoing injuries over the last 12 months.
In fact, the trio have been on the pitch together for just 69 minutes, and Dalglish lauded their performances yesterday, despite a large portion of the goals in the thrashing coming off the back of Brighton's poor defence.
"The three of them are fantastic footballers and they played really well today," he explained.
"Someone said they'd played 69 minutes before so I assumed they must have started somewhere. The more any team gets iconic players like they are on the pitch the better chance they have of being successful.
"But we have got more than three players. The fact we have done as well as we have and that was the first time the three of them have started a match tells you how well the other boys have done.
"We will stand and be counted as a squad and I don't think we have done too badly this year."
Liverpool are currently seventh in the Premier League table, and while hope of winning a Premier League trophy this season has been dashed, the club could still come out with the FA Cup/Carling Cup double and qualify for the Champions League.
