Tutorial to Root Galaxy Note 8.0 N5100 on Android 4.2.2

The international 3G version of Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 with model number GT-N5100 has started receiving Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean software upgrade with base firmware XXCMH1.

The update is currently available for the Note 8.0 users in Germany and is expected to reach other regions soon. Users can grab the update via Over-The-Air (OTA) and through KIES. Also, the update can be installed on any unlocked GT-N5100 unit (except those which are from China, Hong King and Taiwan) as it is an unbranded version of firmware.

Galaxy Note 8.0 users who have upgraded their devices to Android 4.2.2 and currently looking for a root may follow our guide. The tutorial uses CF-Auto-Root package released by recognised XDA developer, Chainfire. The CF-Auto-Root is said to be one of the safest root method available so far. It completely supports Android 4.2.2 and future firmware as well.

Pre-requisites

1) Install USB Driver for Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 to transfer files from the Android device to the computer.

2) Enable USB Debugging Mode on the tablet to connect it with the computer and use Android SDK with it. [Press Menu>> Settings>> Applications. From there navigate and click on Development option then verify the USB Debugging Mode.]

3) As the tutorial is likely to wipe all data of the tablet, create a backup. If the device is having any custom recoveries such as ClockworkMod/TWRP already installed then backup data using the recovery.

4) The tablet should have above 80% battery charge.

5) The Galaxy Note 8.0 should be factory unlocked and not locked to a particular carrier.

6) The device will lose manufacturer's warranty once it is rooted. Users can reclaim the warranty back by unrooting the device later.

7) The CF-Auto-Root file works only with Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 GT-N5100. As applying this on any incorrect variant will brick the device, verify the model number of the Galaxy device by navigating to Settings>> About tablet>> Model number.

Steps to root Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 GT-N5100 on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean

Step-1: Download CF-Auto-Root package for Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 to the computer

File name: CF-Auto-Root-kona3g-kona3gxx-gtn5100.zip

Step-2: Extract the downloaded root zip using winrar/7zip/winzip or any other extracting tool to get a file with .tar.md5 extension

Step-3: Download Odin3 v3.07. Extract the Odin zip to get Odin3 v3.07.exe with some other files

Step-4: Turn off the Galaxy Note 8.0 and wait for about five to six seconds for the vibration to confirm complete power off

Step-5: Boot the tablet into Download Mode by pressing and holding Volume Down, Home and Power buttons together until a construction Android robot icon with a warning triangle appears on the screen. Now press the Volume Up button to continue to enter into Download Mode

Step-6: Run the Odin3 v3.07.exe as an Administrator

Step-7: Connect the Galaxy device to the computer using USB cable while it is in the Download Mode. Wait for some time until Odin detects the device. When the device is connected successfully, an Added message will appear under Odin. Also, the ID: COM box in Odin will turn blue with the COM port number indicating successful connection

Note: If the Added message does not come then try another USB port, try the one located at the back side of the computer. If Odin still fails to recognise the device then re-install USB driver.

Step-8: In Odin, click the PDA button and select CF-Auto-Root-kona3g-kona3gxx-gtn5100.tar.md5 file

Step-9: Configure Odin settings. Verify the Auto-Reboot and F.Reset Time checkboxes are selected. But uncheck the Re-Partition option

Step-10: When everything is set, click the Start button in Odin to begin the installation

Step-11: When the installation process is completed, the tablet will restart automatically. And soon a PASS message with green background will appear in the extreme left box at the very top of Odin. Now unplug the USB cable from the Galaxy Note to disconnect it from the computer

The Galaxy Note 8.0 N5100 running on Android 4.2.2 should now be rooted successfully. Users may now install any app that requires root permission. Also, to verify the root status, install Root Checker app from Google Play Store.
