Arsenal Consider PSV Prodigy Bakkali as Part of Double Deal - Report

Arsenal may have turned their attention to PSV Eindhoven duo Georginio Wijnaldum and Zakaria Bakkali after Arsene Wenger dispatched trusted scout Peter Clarke to watch over the young duo.

Arsene Wenger's hopes of bringing Luis Suarez to the Emirates Stadium this summer have been severely hampered amid reports that the Uruguayan international is now prepared to back down from his demands to leave the club and is open to signing a new contract at Anfield.

With just over two weeks before the transfer window closes, the Gunners boss will now be under greater pressure to bring new faces to the club after chef executive Ivan Gazidis assured fans of big signings this summer.

Wenger may look to address that situation with moves for 22-year-old Wijnaldum and 17-year-old Zakaria Bakkali. Voetbal International report that Wenger dispatched former player and scout Clarke to watch over the young duo in PSV's seasoning opening win over Den Haag at the beginning of the month.

Clarke reportedly left The Hague satisfied, having seen club captain Wijnaldum open the scoring in a 3-2 win while Bakkali impressed in his first ever league appearance for his club.

Despite his 22 years, attacking midfielder Wijnaldum is somewhat of an Eredivisie veteran having made his league debut at just 16 years of age for Feyenoord, prior to his move to PSV in 2011. Bakkali could be set to follow a similar trajectory having exploded onto the scene in just the few short weeks he has been part of the first team.

Following his debut under the watchful eye of Arsenal scout Clarke the young Belgian, who rejected the chance to join Manchester City two years ago, scored his first goal for the club in a Champions League third round qualifying win over Zulte-Waregem.

Three days later he then struck an exquisite hat trick in his home league debut against NEC Nijmegen, becoming the youngest player to achieve such a feat in as he broke a record that has stood since 1966.

The winger's explosive start to his senior career has also earned him a call up to the Belgium national side and could make his debut against France on Wednesday evening, although a thigh injury he picked up in training may delay his international bow.

Although there has been no suggestion whether Arsenal will follow up their scouting of the PSV duo with a formal approach, Wenger will be expected to bring new faces to the club before the closure of the transfer window on September 2.

Although the club remain persistently linked with Bayern Munich midfielder Luiz Gustavo, 20-year-old Yaya Sanogo remains the club's only incoming piece of transfer business this summer.
