Arsenal Made Enquiry For Liverpool's £6.5m Belgian Defensive Target - Report
Arsenal have made an enquiry over the availability of Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld, with Arsene Wenger considering stealing a march on Liverpool to land the defender this summer.
Arsene Wenger has insisted that despite not landing any of his desired targets so far he will be bringing in new players before the transfer window closes on Monday evening.
One of the few top-class players who has yet to be picked up by a club as he considers a move is Alderweireld, who has become an integral part of Ajax's squad after moving through the youth system into the senior line-up in 2008.
A regular Belgium international, Alderweired is now in the final 12 months of his contract with the Dutch outfit and though Liverpool have consistently been connected with a possible move for the centre-back, Brendan Rodgers is yet to make his interest concrete.
Norwich had a bid of £6.9 accepted by Ajax for Alderweireld in recent weeks but the Belgian insisted he wouldn't leave a club that are consistently winning trophies and playing in the Champions League for a mid-table Premier League club.
English football is his preference though and if Arsenal were to make a move, as reports in the Metro and Daily Mail have claimed in recent days, Liverpool would struggle to convince the star that joining a side without European football on offer is a better option.
Defence is an area where Wenger has struggled to find many good signings in recent years and with Alderweireld only 24 years of age, there is a lot of potential to be seen from the player in the future should he continue to put in performances like at Ajax over the last five years.
