Android 4.3 JWR66V Jelly Bean Rolling to Galaxy Nexus I9250 [How to Install]

Google has begun rolling out Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Over-The-Air (OTA) update with base firmware JWR66V for its Nexus devices including Nexus 4, Nexus 7, Nexus 10 and the Galaxy Nexus bearing model number GT-I9250.

Announced at Google's press event, the Android 4.3 JWR66V brings several notable features such as Bluetooth Smart, dialpad auto-complete, improved support for user-account (works only on Android tablets) and OpenGL ES 3.0 support.

To install the OTA update, navigate to Settings>> About phone>> System updates>> Check now. If the update is available for the device, users will be prompted to install the OTA update or there should be an automatic System Upgrade notification as well.

Galaxy Nexus users who are yet to receive the official OTA update and wish to install the same manually may follow our step-by-step guide.

Pre-requisites

1) Install USB Driver for Galaxy Nexus to connect the Android device with computer.

2) Enable USB Debugging Mode on the phone to connect it with the computer and use Android SDK with it. [Press Menu>> Settings>> Applications. From there navigate and click on Development option then check the USB Debugging Mode.]

3) As the tutorial might wipe out all data of the phone, create a backup. If the device is having any custom recoveries such as CWM/TWRP already installed then backup data using recovery.

4) The Galaxy Nexus should have above 80% battery charge.

5) The phone should be factory unlocked and not locked to a particular carrier.

6) The Galaxy Nexus should be on Android 4.2.2 JDQ39 (the previous firmware) which is not rooted and has stock recovery. Do not proceed if the device does not have Android 4.2.1 JOP40D installed earlier.

7) The device will no longer belong to a rooted version with the installation of official build.

8) Android 4.3 JWR66V Jelly Bean build is compatible only with Galaxy Nexus GT-I9250. As flashing this on incorrect variant might brick the device, verify the model number of device by navigating to Settings>> About phone>> Model number.

Steps to install Android 4.3 JWR66V Jelly Bean on Galaxy Nexus GT-I9250 [For non-rooted]

Step-1: Download Android 4.3 JWR66V Jelly Bean official update for Galaxy Nexus to the computer. Rename the downloaded zip to update.zip

Step-2: Connect the phone to the computer using USB cable. Then copy the update.zip to the SD card of the phone. Ensure that the file is in the root, not in any folders

Step-3: Unplug the USB cable from the phone and turn it off

Step-4: Boot the Galaxy Nexus into Bootloader Mode. To do so, turn the device on while pressing and holding the Volume Up, Volume Down and Power buttons together until the Fastboot menu and START appear on the screen

Step-5: Follow the navigation instructions on the screen. Press the Volume Up button for several times until the RECOVERY appears on the screen. Select it pressing the Power button

Step-6: An exclamation mark will appear. Again hold Volume Up and Power buttons together. The Recovery Mode menu should come soon

Step-7: In recovery mode, select update from SD card. Now select update.zip which was earlier copied to the SD card of the phone. Select it using the Power button and confirm installation

Step-8: After the installation process is completed, the phone will boot. The device will take about five minutes to boot for the first time

As the Galaxy Nexus boots up, it should be updated with Android 4.3 JWR66V Jelly Bean official firmware. Head over to Settings>> About phone to verify the new software version running on the phone.

Galaxy nexus users who are running on a rooted version may follow the guide below. The device should have ClockworkMod recovery already installed. Perform a nandroid backup of the current firmware which can be restored later.

Steps to install Android 4.3 JWR66V Jelly Bean on Galaxy Nexus GT-I9250 [For rooted]

Step-1: Download Android 4.3 JWR66V OTA update for Galaxy Nexus to the computer [Link to be updated soon]

Step-2: Plug in the USB cable to the phone to connect it with the computer. Then copy the downloaded firmware zip to the SD card of the phone. Ensure that the file is in the SD card root

Step-3: Power off the Galaxy Nexus

Step-4: Place the phone into Bootloader Mode. Switch on the phone while pressing and holding Volume Up, Volume Down and Power buttons together until the Fastboot menu and START on the top of the screen appear

Step-5: Follow the navigation instructions on the screen. Press the Volume Up button several times until RECOVERY appears. Then press the Power button to select it

Step-6: In CWM recovery, scroll down to flash zip from sdcard then press the Power button to select it

Step-7: Press the Power button again to select choose zip from sdcard

Note: Users might have to turn off signature verification from the toggle signature verification option.

Step-8: Using the Volume keys navigate to the Android 4.3 zip and select it using Power button. Then confirm installation on the next screen. The installation process should begin now and would take a few minutes to complete

Step-9: When the installation process is completed, return to the main recovery menu and reboot the phone by selecting reboot system now. The phone will now boot up into the official firmware and it would take about five minutes to boot up for the first time

Android 4.3 JWR66V Jelly Bean official update should now be installed and running on the Galaxy Nexus. Navigate to Settings >>About phone to verify the new software version the device.
