Update Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi with Android 4.2 AOSP Custom ROM [Guide]

The Motorola Xoom (Wi-Fi) can be updated to Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) via the newest Android Open Source Project (AOSP) ROM. Google dropped support for Xoom by not providing the latest version of the Jelly Bean software but Android developers have succeeded in bringing the software to the Xoom.

Users looking to update to Jelly Bean can do so by following this tutorial. However, IBTimes UK warns its readers it will not be held responsible for damage to the device during installation. Remember this ROM and procedure is compatible only with the Motorola Xoom (Wi-Fi model).

Pre-Requisites

  • Ensure all important data is backed-up
  • Ensure device has at least 80 percent battery charge
  • Enable USB debugging
  • Ensure all necessary USB drivers are installed on Motorola Xoom

To Install Android 4.2 AOSP Custom ROM on Motorola Xoom

  • Download Android 4.2 AOSP ROM and Google apps package to computer
  • Connect tablet to computer using USB cable and copy Android 4.2 ROM and Google apps zip files to device's SD card
  • Switch device off and enter Bootloader mode (to do so, press and hold Volume Up, Volume Down and Power buttons)
  • Choose Bootloader and navigate to Recovery
  • Follow onscreen instructions and choose Bootloader and then go to Recovery
  • In CWM Recovery, wipe data. Now, scroll to and select Flash Zip from SD Card by pressing Power button
  • Select Choose Zip from SD card
  • Navigate to and choose Android 4.2 ROM file and tap Yes to confirm installation. The installation will begin
  • Repeat the above step to install Google Apps
  • After installation, go to +++++Go Back and reboot the device by choosing Reboot System Now from Recovery menu

The Android 4.2 AOSP firmware has now been installed on the Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi model. This may be verified by browsing to Settings > About Phone.
