Overview
The only clash that can better the game between world number one Lee Chong Wei and world number two Chen Long is the match between Lin Dan and the Malaysian. After meeting in the finals of consecutive Olympic finals, this time around the match between the arch rivals was completed in the semi-finals.
Dan had the upper hand on his Malaysian counterpart coming into the match, as he had won two gold medals in the last two Olympic Games beating Chong Wei in the finals, but the Malaysian finally got his revenge and dumped out the Chinese legend 15-21, 21-11, 22-21 to make his third consecutive final and give him a chance of attaining his first gold.
The world number two, Long, on the other hand, came through a comfortable straight sets 21-14, 21-15 win over world number four Viktor Axelsen. The intensity of the match was low compared to the first semi-final, but Long will face a determined Chong Wei in the final. The Chinese shuttler is looking for his best finish in the Olympics with a bronze medal his best achievement thus far.
The head-to-head record between the two top ranked players is 13-12 with Chong Wei in the lead, but despite the stat, Long has failed to win in their last four encounters with the most recent being at the 2016 Asia Championships.
