Rapper The Game sued for $12m after punching policeman at basketball game
Rapper The Game has been hit with a multi-million dollar lawsuit after allegedly attacking an off-duty police officer during a basketball game.
The 2 March incident occurred as the 35-year-old star, whose real name is Jayceon Taylor, played with his team La Familia in the JBL National Pro-Am Basketball League at the Hollywood High School gym in Los Angeles.
In court documents obtained by TMZ, Onyebuchi Awaji claims that he suffered physical, emotional and financial damage after an altercation during the game led to him being sucker-punched by the hip hop star. He also alleges that although he did not instigate a fight with the How We Do hitmaker before he was assaulted, he got hit so hard it may have caused brain damage.
A video published on the site shows the punching incident taking place, but does not show what transpired beforehand.
Awaji is now seeking $12million dollars in damages for his pain and suffering, emotional distress and medical costs.
Although The Game is yet to respond to the lawsuit, which was filed in April, shortly after the initial incident he claimed that Awaji was the instigator and that he attacked in self-defence. He also took to Instagram to announce he would not be participating in another Pro-Am game.
"WE WILL NOT BE PARTICIPATING in the #DrewLeague this year due to us & Nike not being able to agree on a certain issue," The Game wrote.
"See, the problem with homegrown organizations is once they go corporate, it takes the raw, original format & waters it down until it becomes something forced versus something that was REAL, AUTHENTIC & for the neighborhood."
