Steve Jobs - Top 10 Quotes. Here's to the crazy ones...
Aside from the must-have products and one of the biggest corporate turnarounds in history, Jobs was also known for his speeches. Whether he was announcing a new product, giving a TV interview, or addressing a gathering of university students, Jobs always had a truly remarkable way with words. Below are ten of his most memorable quotes.
Three of Jobs' most impressive quotes come from a speech given to Stanford University students in 2005. Steve gave a brief history of his life, including his battle with cancer, and told the students to aim for their goals, and how to reach them.
"If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on."
"Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish."
"We don't get a chance to do that many things, and everyone should be really excellent. Because this is our life."
When talking about ambition, Jobs never minced his words:
"I want to put a ding in the universe."
After being diagnosed with cancer in 2004, Jobs often spoke about his own mortality, clearly not afraid of death.
"being the richest man in the cemetery doesn't matter to me. Going to bed at night saying we've done something wonderful, that's what matters to me"
"No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don't want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life's change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true."
Famously a huge fan of The Beatles, Jobs once likened his business model at Apple to the band:
"My model for business is The Beatles: They were four guys that kept each other's negative tendencies in check; they balanced each other. And the total was greater than the sum of the parts"
Often bordering on spiritual, Jobs always knew what he wanted to get out of life. Making money was simply a by-product - he took a $1 a year salary while at Apple - and it was his vision and drive that led to Apple making bold moves, entering new product markets, trying something a bit different, and eventually succeeding at almost everything the company turned its hand to.
"Design is not just what it looks like. Design is how it works."
"Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary."
A quote from a 1997 Apple TV advert, narrated by Jobs sums up the co-founder - and anyone else who wants to follow in his foosteps - perfectly:
"Here's to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in the square holes... the ones who see things differently -- they're not fond of rules... You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can't do is ignore them because they change things... they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do"
