Spanish fans were in shock after watching the 5-1 humiliation in its World Cup opener against the Netherlands. It was Spain's worst defeat in 64 years. City streets, accustomed to noisy celebrations after Spain wins, were eerily quiet after the rout as fans filed silently out of bars.
When Daniel Sturridge equalised for England two minutes after Italy scored, team physio Gary Lewin celebrated so hard he dislocated his ankle. But then Mario Balotelli broke English hearts when he scored with a header in the second half.
