Australian Open 2013: Murray and Williams Progress to Third Round
Andy Murray has progressed into the third round of 2013 Australian open, after winning his second round tie 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 in straight sets against Portuguese Joao Sousa at the Rod Laver Arena. The World No 3 will now face Ricardas Berankis, who defeated 25th seed Florian Mayer of Germany, for the next round match.
"I got up a couple of breaks pretty quickly in the first two sets so I could kind of play. I don't mean loose points, but I could try to shorten the points, which helps. I also served well too. I got a lot of free points off my serve. There were very few long rallies, so it worked out well for me because they were really, really tough conditions," Murray said.
Seventh seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga of France is now set to face Slovenian Blaz Kavcic for the third round tie, after winning his second round game 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 to Japanese Go Soeda.
The upset of the day came in Court 8 when Marcel Granollers lost to Jeremy Chandy of France in a four set match while 21st seed Andreas Seppi of Italy made a comeback after being 2-1 down in third set, to win the game 7-6, 5-7, 6-7, 7-6, 6-2 against Denis Istomin.
The world No 21 is now set to take on 12th seed Marin Cilic for the third round clash, after the Croatian won the second round game in straight sets to Rajeev Ram of America. There were also win for Philipp Kohlschreiber (17) and Milos Raonic (13), among others.
Women's Singles
Meanwhile, Victoria Azarenka of Belarus won her second round game 6-1, 6-0 against Eleni Daniilidou, as the match ended in less than an hour at the Rod Laver Arena. The women's world No 1 is now set to face Jamie Hampton for the next round match of the tournament.
"I definitely stepped it up from my first match, and I was in the zone trying to execute all of my shots. I was trying to make everything happen, and that's what I'm happy about. It was pretty hot. That's why I was trying to play fast. The first match I got a little bit sunburned and you don't want to make that mistake again," Azarenka explained.
Third Seed Serena Williams, just like Azarenka, also won her second round game against Garbine Muguruza in straight sets as the American will now face Ayumi Morita of Japan for the third round encounter.
Other seeds through are Caroline Wozniacki (10), Su-Wei Hsieh (26), Yanina Wickmayer (20) and Roberta Vinci (16).
