49ers Owner Jed York Gets One-Day Jail Term After $140 Sex Sting as NFL Reviews Case

San Francisco 49ers principal owner Jed York received a one-day jail sentence after allegedly arranging to pay $140 (£103) for sexual activity during an undercover operation in Ohio.

York pleaded no contest to misdemeanour charges of disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools. The jail term was credited as already served, while the 46-year-old was ordered to pay $1,150 (£844) in fines.

The NFL confirmed that it was reviewing the incident under its personal conduct policy, which applies to team owners as well as players, coaches and other league personnel.

York Arrested at Ohio Trailer Park

Police arrested York on Sunday at the Wheat Hill Mobile Home Community in East Palestine, approximately 20 miles from his hometown of Youngstown.

Court documents reportedly said York responded to an online advertisement and arranged to exchange $140 for sexual activity. The East Palestine Police Department conducted the operation with assistance from the Mahoning Valley Human Trafficking Task Force.

York initially posted a $5,000 (£3,670) bond after officers took him into custody.

Authorities seized his mobile phone and $160 (£118) in cash during the arrest. Court records later directed that the money be forfeited to the human-trafficking task force, while York's phone was returned.

Prostitution Charge Reduced

York was initially accused of engaging in prostitution. However, prosecutors amended that allegation to disorderly conduct as part of an agreement reached before his court appearance.

He pleaded no contest to disorderly conduct and possessing criminal tools, with the mobile phone identified in reports as the alleged tool used to respond to the advertisement.

A no-contest plea allows a court to impose punishment without the defendant formally admitting guilt to the allegations. York received concurrent one-day jail sentences and credit for the day he had already spent in custody.

He also completed an online educational course as part of the resolution.

The San Francisco 49ers acknowledged the case but declined to discuss the circumstances further, saying the legal matter had been resolved.

NFL Opens Conduct Review

An NFL spokesperson said the league was aware of York's case and would examine it under the personal conduct policy.

The policy states that everyone associated with the NFL must avoid behaviour that damages public confidence in the league. It specifically covers owners, alongside players, coaches, officials and other employees.

NFL discipline does not depend entirely on whether someone receives a criminal conviction. The league can conduct its own investigation and impose penalties when it concludes that a person's behaviour violated its standards.

Possible measures involving owners can include fines, suspensions or restrictions on participation in league and team business. However, the NFL had not announced any punishment against York at the time of writing.

Who Is Jed York?

York is the principal owner of the 49ers and previously served as the organisation's chief executive. He took control of the team's daily operations from his parents in 2008 and became its principal owner in 2024.

The 49ers have reached three Super Bowls during his leadership, although they lost each appearance. York also oversaw the development of Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara.

His influence extends beyond the franchise. The 49ers' official website says he serves on NFL committees covering stadiums, business ventures, league-owned media, fan engagement and major events.

York also has links to British football through 49ers Enterprises, which holds ownership interests in Leeds United and Rangers.

The criminal case may have been resolved in Ohio, but the NFL's separate review means York could still face consequences within professional football.
