$5,000 reward for information on couple who filmed themselves skydiving paid for with stolen credit cards
"The emotional impact of identity theft is similar to that suffered by victims of violent crimes."
Police in New York state have offered a reward of $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of a couple who allegedly stole a credit card to purchase sky diving trips.
Suffolk County Police got access to the footage from those dives in Shirley and have since released video to the public.
Suffolk Crime Stoppers has offered the cash reward after police said that the couple had purchased two dives and that video footage at Sky Dive Long Island was taken on 20 June.
The theft reportedly cost a sky diving company $700.
In the video, a man asked the couple how they are feeling before the jump. "I'm scared and I'm excited," the woman says while the man replies: "I'm not really scared I just want to get the feeling out already".
"That was amazing," the man is heard saying on video, adding: "best thing I ever did in my life."
The footage first shows the woman jumping out strapped to an instructor before showing the man's jump.
"I would say it's somewhat brazen," Suffolk Police Chief Stuart Cameron said. "Normally, if you're using a stolen credit card you don't want to have your photo taken."
On the Suffolk County Police Department's website about identity fraud it states that "[t]he emotional impact of identity theft is similar to that suffered by victims of violent crimes." Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-220-TIPS.
