Adam Johnson has been suspended by Sunderland AFC after he was arrested on suspicion of having sex with a child.

Winger Johnson, 27, was held by Durham Police who are acting on an allegation against the England international.

The Premier League club announced Johnson's suspension in a statement to the Press Association.

"Sunderland AFC has confirmed that Adam Johnson has been suspended from the club, pending the outcome of a police investigation," it read.

It came after it was alleged Johnson had sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.

A spokesman for Durham Police said: "A 27-year-old man was arrested earlier today on suspicion of sexual activity with a girl under 16. He remains in police custody and is helping officers with their enquiries."
