Siri

Firstly, the SIM-free handset costs, this is the price of the iPhone 4S from Apple with no contract, so you can use your current SIM card; ideal if you're on a great deal or currently stuck in a long contract but want the new iPhone now.

16GB - £499 32GB - £599 64GB - £699

These sound high but, if you're on a £15 a month contract, for example, paying the high price up front could save you money in the long run.

As there are dozens of different tariffs, we've included three from each network; the cheapest and most expensive per month, and a mid-range compromise. All prices are based on 24-month contracts and 'unlimited' minutes, texts and data packages all carry a fair usage policy.

Vodafone

£26 per month - 100 minutes, 100 texts, 250mb data. iPhone 4S price; 16GB - £359, 32GB - £439, 64GB - £519

£36 per month - 600 minutes, unlimited texts, 500mb data. iPhone 4S price; 16GB - £159, 32GB - £239, 64GB - £319

Vodafone is also offering a £59 rebate for iPhone 4S pre-orders, which will be paid back to you in November.

The above prices are for 24-month contracts; 18-month contracts cost about £4.50 more per month, and it's an extra £10 per month for a one year contract.

O2 doesn't include data in its price plans, and instead offers three data packages as bolt-ons; these are priced at 100mb - £3, 500mb - £6, 1GB - £10.

Summary:
With its £59 rebate for iPhone 4S pre-orders, Vodafone offers a good headset price, but Three offers 2000 minutes and 5000 texts with unlimited data for £35, mking it by far the best mid-range deal. Orange's mid-range tariff is cheaper, but with just 200 minutes and 200 texts, offers a poor deal.

For all-you-can-eat, Orange offers unlimited (with a fair usage policy) minutes and texts, and a huge 2GB of data. Of the high-end plans, Orange offers the best package.
