Apple has officially unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, pairing the biggest display ever fitted to the device with a striking $1,999 (around £1,475) starting price.

The radically redesigned handset opens to reveal a 7.6-inch screen and packs Apple's A20 Pro chip, new camera tricks, Siri AI and iOS 27 features built specifically around its folding design.

iPhone Duo Price Starts at $1,999

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 (around £1,475) in the US, making it one of Apple's most expensive smartphones to date. Buyers can choose between 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB storage capacities.

Apple is also offering the device for $83.29 (£61.50) per month over 24 months. Eligible customers can access its Klarna-backed Apple Upgrade leasing programme, with 24-month plans starting at $57.99 (£42.80) per month.

Accessories will carry an additional premium. The iPhone Duo Case costs $79 (£58), while the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand is priced at $129 (£95).

iPhone Duo Release Date and Pre-Orders

iPhone Duo pre-orders begin on Friday, 16 October, at 5:00am PT, with the official release date set for Friday, 23 October.

Apple says the foldable iPhone will initially launch in more than 70 countries and regions, including the US, UK, Australia, Canada, China, India and Japan. Another 28 markets will receive it from 30 October.

The handset comes in two colours: star white and night sky.

iPhone Duo Features Two Displays

The defining iPhone Duo feature is its folding display system. When closed, users get a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display, which Apple says provides 90 per cent of the screen area of the iPhone 18 Pro.

Opening the device reveals a 7.6-inch Super Retina XDR display, which Apple says is 50 per cent larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max screen.

Both displays support ProMotion, Always On and up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Apple has also applied a nano-texture finish to the inner screen to reduce glare, reflections and the visibility of the crease.

Touch ID is integrated into the side button, while Apple Pencil with USB-C support is planned for later this year.

A20 Pro Powers Apple's Foldable iPhone

Inside, the iPhone Duo runs on the same A20 Pro chip used in Apple's iPhone 18 Pro models. It is paired with a custom vapour chamber designed to manage heat during gaming, multitasking and AI workloads.

The dual-battery architecture delivers up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display or 44 hours using the outer screen, according to Apple. The phone can also reach 50 per cent charge in around 20 minutes with compatible wired charging.

iOS 27 has meanwhile been adapted for the folding design. Split View allows two apps to run side by side on an iPhone for the first time, while users can save app pairs and open two windows of the same app.

iPhone Duo Cameras Get New Foldable Tricks

The camera system includes a 48MP Fusion Main camera with an optical-quality 2x Telephoto and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera.

Its folding design introduces Duo Preview, which lets subjects see themselves on the outer display while being photographed. Users can also take selfies with the higher-resolution rear cameras.

Other additions include AI-powered Smart Take, Kid Cue and Duo FaceTime, while the main camera supports 4K 120fps Dolby Vision video recording.

The $1,999 price (£1,475) also brings grade 5 titanium construction, IP68 water and dust resistance, an eSIM-only design worldwide, Apple Intelligence and the new Siri AI experience.
