Arsenal plot move in signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Mario Suarez in January
Arsenal are considering a move in signing Atletico Madrid midfielder Mario Suarez in January, according to the Daily Mail.
The 27-year-old was a regular inclusion in Atletico's title winning campaign. However, this season he has seen his first team appearances being limited as he has started only in six league games.
Diego Simeone has preferred Gabi, Tiago, Raul Garcia and Saul Niguez ahead of Suarez in the defensive midfield position, which has seen him settle for limited playing time at Vicente Calderon.
According to respected Spanish journalist Eduardo Inda, Arsenal will sign Suarez in the winter transfer window as Arsene Wenger looks to add depth in the holding midfield position.
The Gunners currently have Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta as the recognised defensive midfielders in the squad. However, the former Everton man is out of action and will not play before January.
In addition to this, Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey have struggled with injuries as the England international is set to miss close to first few months of the calendar year.
Wenger has made signing a midfielder a priority in the mid-season transfer window. However, the Arsenal manager claims that he will only sign a player when the right opportunity is made available.
"If you look at the number of games some players played and the injuries we have with Wilshere, Ramsey and Arteta, we are a bit short at the moment in midfield," Wenger explained.
"There is a need there [to enter the market] but the right opportunity has to come up. To buy, simply to buy, is not what we want to do but if the right opportunity comes up, we will do it."
"There's no setback with Ramsey but it's a bit slower than I expected it to be. Because he had a setback last year, we have to be very cautious with his thigh – he was out for three months. We have to be a bit more cautious than we would like to be," the Arsenal manager added.
Should Suarez join Arsenal, he will be unable to feature in the Champions League after featuring for Atletico this season.
