  • Frenchman denies that his position will be under review at the end of the season.
  • However, he will sit down for talks with the board and it remains a possibility that he will not see out his two-year contract.
  • Wenger insists Gunners are yet to decide if they plan to sell contract rebels Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil in January.

Arsene Wenger has sought to clarify suggestions that he may not see out the remainder of his latest Arsenal contract and insists the club have yet to make a decision on whether or not they will look to offload contract rebels Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez during the upcoming January transfer window.

European football's longest-serving manager finally agreed a new two-year deal in May after months of speculation that had a detrimental impact on the team and suggested at last month's testy AGM that the Gunners board would review his position at the end of the 2017-18 season.

Addressing those comments during an interview with beIN Sports, Wenger, who has now been at the helm for 21 years, denied that his performance would be under particular scrutiny and claimed that such a sit-down was not unusual.

However, he also offered no guarantees that he would remain in place until the end of the 2018-19 campaign as planned.

"I said I sit down with the board every end of season and see where we go from there - so that's not exactly the same," he said.

"That's as well sometimes you know, you make a sentence and people turn it the way they would like to see it.

"That's what I said - I have a two-year contract, I will always try to go to the end of my contract but always have the honesty to sit down with the board and see where we go from there. So that's quite simple."

Decision time is quickly approaching on the respective futures of attacking duo Ozil and Sanchez, who have still yet to agree extensions to their own expiring contracts.

Wenger previously stated that the duo could both be sold in the New Year as Arsenal look to avoid losing them for nothing in the summer, although insists that a definitive decision will not be made until the end of December.

Influential forward Sanchez continues to be heavily linked with a reunion with former Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola after seeing a £60m ($78.9m) move to dominant Premier League leaders Manchester City scuppered on deadline day thanks to Arsenal's failure to secure the services of AS Monaco midfielder Thomas Lemar as an 11th-hour replacement.

Manchester United, Atletico Madrid, Inter Milan and Besiktas have all been mentioned in connection with much-maligned playmaker Ozil, meanwhile.

"No, because no decision has been made on that front - do we let anybody go in January or not," Wenger responded when asked for an update on the pair with January fast approaching. "We'll have to to think about that to see where we stand with them at the end of December."

Arsenal missed out on qualification for the Champions League for the first time in two decades last term and currently sit sixth in the top-flight, 12 points off the title pace after winning six of their opening 11 games.

Typically strong at home, all four of the club's defeats so far this season have come away from the Emirates Stadium.

And while Wenger admits his side produced an unacceptable performance in a 4-0 thumping at Liverpool in August that came just five days before the end of the summer window, he blamed a sequence of "unbelievable" refereeing decisions and "very special circumstances" for other losses to Stoke City, Watford and City.

"Is it a coincidence? Personally I hope so," he said of that string of supposed officiating errors. "Is it acceptable for any football club? I would say no."
