Australian authorities have arrested two people and seized more than A$200 million worth of drugs hidden in a shipping container at a Melbourne port, police said on Wednesday (April 10).

Police said a chemical analysis of more than 3,300 bottles of carpet cleaner revealed 96 of them contained methamphetamine suspended in liquid.

The haul totals 365 litres of the Class A drug.

Police said further forensic testing would be undertaken to confirm the exact weight and purity of the substance.

Australian Federal Police (AFP) said the operation involved state police in Victoria, the Australian Crime Commission and Australian Customs and Border Protection Service and several international law enforcement agencies.

"Last night two people were arrested in relation to the seizure and we haven't ruled out the possibility of further arrests. A further person, a 45-year-old male, remains in police custody and is assisting police with their inquiries at the present time," said Scott Lee, Melbourne office commander.

It is estimated that the 365 litres of liquid methamphetamine would equate to 280kg of pure methamphetamine.
