Baahubali 2 box office collection in US leaves Tom Hanks and Emma Watson's The Circle behind
This comes as a surprise as the SS Rajamouli directed film opened in only 425 theatres across North America.
After creating history at the Indian box office, Baahubali 2 is scoring high in Hollywood, too. The Indian film is third in the US box office chart despite limited theatre release. What is surprising is that the Prabhas-led movie has left the Tom Hanks and Emma Watson starrer The Circle in fourth place.
Distributed by Great India Films in North America, the SS Rajamouli-directed fantasy saga opened in only 425 theatres and according to Box Office Mojo, it has already collected an estimated $10m (just below £8m) since its release. The film has also beaten The Fate Of The Furious and Logan in terms of higher per screen earnings in the opening week.
Indian film trade analyst Taran Adarsh said Baahubali (made on a budget of 2.5bn rupees or £30m) is the first Indian film to do so well in the American box office. "No Indian film has achieved it in USA in 2 days," he tweeted.
According to Adarsh, the sequel to Baahubali 1 has earned £194,523 in its opening weekend in the UK, while some theatres are yet to report their earnings.
It took five years to produce the two films that have shown impressive box office results across India and abroad.
Responding to the overwhelming success it received globally, Rajamouli thanked everyone for their love and support and said: "It's only natural that a big project like Baahubali faces hurdles during release. I must say that the enormous love and support that was given by Baahubali Fans made us cruise through the obstacles."
"Thank you everyone who have been with us for the past 5 years encouraging us. at every turn. You have given us such a big success that we can keep it in our hearts for the rest of our lives," he added.
The Circle, on the other hand, was released in 3,163 theatres across the US but failed to leave a mark on the audience despite having Hanks and Watson as the lead. The film earned $9.3m in its opening weekend.
