Cannes Thieves Steal $1m in Jewels
More than $1m worth of Jewellery have been stolen from a hotel in Cannes. The jewels, due to be loaned out to movie stars during the prestigious festival along the French Riviera, were robbed from a safe in the Novotel Hotel room of an employee of Chopard.
The Swiss jewellers are one of the sponsors of the festival, with the likes Nicole Kidman and Cindy Crawford spotted at this year's opening ceremony wearing Chopard jewellery. Organisers have said the Palm d'Or, the trophy presented to the film awarded best picture, and also designed by Chopard, is safe.
Ironically the jewel theft took place the same day as Sofia Coppola's new film, The Bling Ring, premiered, about a group of teenagers who rob celebrities' homes.
