Overview
The Super Kings come into this game having managed to hold on to nine players in their squad from the previous IPL campaign.
MS Dhoni, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin and Dwayne Bravo were retained prior to the auction. But no one could prevent CSK from holding on to Faf du Plessis, Mohit Sharma, Ben Hilfenhaus and Baba Aparajith during the auction.
The Chennai based team managed to reach the finals on five occasions in the last six seasons and have triumphed only twice.
Last year, they finished first on top of the table with 22 points having won 11 matches out of 16 in the Group stage. CSK went on to progress into the final and lost to Mumbai Indians by 23 runs.
Dhoni's men also qualified for the semi-finals of the 2013 Champions League T20 where they lost to Rajasthan Royals by 14 runs.
Meanwhile, KXIP have qualified into the knockout stages of the IPL only once and that too during the inaugural season in 2008.
In the sixth edition of the IPL, the Mohali based outfit finished sixth on the table with 16 points, having won eight matches.
For this year's IPL, Sanjay Bangar's side have made some significant additions with the Australian quadruple of George Bailey, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh and Glenn Maxwell.
The rules permit only a maximum of four foreign players to feature in a single game, which gives Bangar a selection headache due to the presence of South Africa's David Miller.
Having revamped their squad, skipper Bailey will be hoping to guide his side into the knockout stages and has no better way to embark on the quest than with a victory against his former team.
