Children arrested in Northern Ireland flag protests
As loyalist protests and violence in Northern Ireland continues for the third week, last night saw more widespread and strategic attacks against police. A police officer was injured as about 200 loyalists confronted police in East Belfast. Widespread arrests then revealed a number of children taking part; the youngest believed to be 11 years old.
The protests are allegedly over the restrictions of the flying of the union flag on Belfast city hall which the council voted through a couple of weeks ago.
Yesterday Northern Ireland Secretary Theresa Villiers met leaders of Northern Ireland political parties to discuss the flags controversy. She said they must "come together" to resolve the protests.
