China Sends in Naval Taskforce over 'Island Dispute'
China has sent a taskforce of 11 ships and eight aircraft today, to what it says is an undisclosed location in the East China Sea. For naval exercises, aimed at "sharpening response to emergencies in missions to safeguard territorial sovereignty", according to the state run media agency.
Tensions have risen between China and Japan as the issue of territorial sovereignty over a series of Islands known as Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu which China, Japan and Taiwan all lay to, has escalated in the past few weeks. This footage from CCTV shows members of the Chinese military, as well as footage of a frigate, fighter jets and helicopters patrolling the waters and follows a previous patrol of vessels to waters near to the islands. And this show of sea power is sure inflame tensions even more.
Reports this week have said Japan and the United States were also considering holding a joint military drill possibly in November to simulate retaking a remote island from foreign forces.
