Cold Water: Justin Bieber, Ed Sheeran and Major Lazer have a summer smash with new single

Justin Bieber has created another dance banger with his latest single Cold Water. The dancehall-tinged track, a collaboration with Major Lazer and MØ, premiered on 22 July and is already a hit with the song soaring to number one on the iTunes chart.

Cold Water, which was co-written with British singer Ed Sheeran and co-produced by Benny Blanco, is expected to serve as the lead single for Major Lazer's upcoming fourth studio album Music Is The Weapon. Bieber sings on the soft dance number: "Everybody gets high sometimes, you know/ What else can we do when we're feeling low?" and: "And if you feel you're sinking, I will jump right over into cold, cold water for you."

Revealing how the epic collaboration came to fruition, Major Lazer's Diplo said: "I had been trying to link with Benny Blanco and Ed Sheeran for years to find the right song we could all work on together and the moment I heard this one, I knew that it was the one. The timing was perfect and when we approached Justin, he was also in love with the song we all had written. I thought it would be interesting to incorporate another vocal and seeing she's family, I reached out to MØ and we decided to try our best to make something fresh and interesting as Major Lazer."

Within hours of its release to Apple Music and Spotify, Cold Water had reached number one on the US iTunes chart shifting Sia and Sean Paul's Cheap Thrills into second place. The track follows on from two major releases from Major Lazer, with Light It Up featuring Nyla and Fuse ODG dominating airwaves and Lean On becoming the most streamed song of all time with 820 million plays and more than 1.5 billion views on YouTube.

Fans have flooded Twitter with positive reactions to Cold Water, with one tweeting: "I'm tripping right now over the beauty of #ColdWater I came down with the feels @justinbieber #ColdWater I'll take a glass!!!!" while another added: "#ColdWater is stuck in my head lol i can't stop to listening it."

Addressing the experimentative sound of their recent releases, Diplo told Rolling Stone: "On the radio, we went through a bland period for a while, but now there is just some awesome music. You can tell if something's authentic or not."
