England v India: Ajinkya Rahane Century Frustrates Hosts
England straddled inspiration and ineptitude with equal measure as Ajinkya Rahane's century prevented India from being overwhelmed on day one of the second Test at Lord's.
Rahane helped the tourists recover from 145 for 7 to finish the day on 280 for 9, with Bhuvneshwar Kumar chipping in with 36.
James Anderson, who along with Ravindra Jaedja faces an ICC hearing follows charges relating to an incident during the first Test at Trent Bridge, took four wickets, with Stuart Broad taking two but it was another day of missed opportunities for Alastair Cook's team.
Against the backdrop of ICC charges against the conduct of Anderson and Jaedja during the first Test following complaints from both sides, England won the toss and bowled but failed to make significant inroads on a green pitch.
Poor lengths from the England bowlers, who were once again without a front-line spinner after Simon Kerrigan was left out despite being called into the squad before the match, and Matt Prior's uncertainty behind the stumps meant India restricted the damage.
Four wickets after lunch swung the momentum back in England's favour but it merely built the platform for India to stage a recovery in the early evening, ending the day nine wickets down and threatening another substantial final stand with Mohammed Shami (14 not out) and Ishant Sharma (12) both looking comfortable at the close.
