Overview
Hosts England's dominance in the limited overs format of the game continued on 24 August, as they cruised past Pakistan to win the first One Day International (ODI) clash by 44 runs via Duckworth/Lewis method on Wednesday. In a match, interrupted by rain the Three Lions bowled impressively to restrict their opponents to 260 runs off their 50 overs, with Mark Wood and Liam Plunkett in particular bowling with pace and fire.
In the batting department, Jason Roy and Joe Root continued their good form, scoring fifties to take the side home. Roy in particular, has been a joy to watch with his batting improving on a daily basis, and with his propensity to score quickly, he is a real asset to the team. In fact, he has scored three fifty plus scores in his last five ODI innings which has helped his team take control of the game early on.
The hosts do not have any injury concerns at the moment and are expected to go in with the same side that played in the first ODI at Southampton.
Their opponents Pakistan, started strongly in the first ODI only to fade towards the end. The team at one point was on course to score well over 300 only for the rain to interrupt their flow, which eventually hurt them in the end.
Skipper Azhar Ali finally broke his run of poor form, compiling a well made 82, while Babar Azam and Sarfraz Ahmed impressed with the bat. What hurts them is that at times they fail to rotate the strike in the middle overs, relying solely on big shots to score. The team management will need to work on this area, which has been a big concern for the team over a couple of years.
The bowling too looked listless, with Mohammad Amir and Wahab Riaz struggling to get pace and movement. The returning Umar Gul provides variety in attack, but they will need their premier pacers to step up.
Spinner Yasir Shah who was dropped for the first game is expected to play which would mean that either Mohammad Nawaz or Imad Wasim miss out.
