GTA 5: Take Two confirms 60m units shipped worldwide and expects GTA Online profits to grow
Take Two has revealed in its financial report for Q3 2016 that 60 million copies of Grand Theft Auto 5 have been shipped worldwide to retailers, across all five platforms, since it was first released in 2013. The figure is not indicative of units sold to customers, though, as the statement relates to units "sold-in" rather than sold-through.
Regardless, the number reported by VG247 is still indicative of the game's huge and well-publicised success. It puts the game up there among the biggest ever selling games, including Minecraft (72 million), Wii Sports (83 million) and Super Mario Bros (40 million).
Take Two has revealed that GTA Online profits continue to grow, with December 2015 seeing "record revenue results" (alliteration bonus!). The company also expects those revenues to continue growing over the year ahead.
Regarding games published by 2K Games, the report started that upcoming open-world crime game Mafia 3 will be released during the 2016 calendar year and more information will be released "in the coming months". And it hyped first-person shooter Battleborn, which is set for release in May.
NBA 2K16 has sold six million units to retailers since its release in September 2015, with sales up 72% year-on-year – a great sign for one of the biggest sports video game outside of those developed and released by EA.
