Human Chain Rescues 12-year-old Drowning Boy in New Zealand
A 12-year-old boy from New Zealand was saved from drowning when beach-goers came to his rescue.
The boy who was swept out by rough sea waves was rescued by people on the beach who formed a human chain to pull the boy out, back to the shore.
According to One News in New Zealand, Josh McQuoid had gone to the beach and was playing with a friend along Marine Parade beach in Napier, New Zealand, when he got pulled in by the waves.
"The waves smashed me so much, there were five really big ones, they flipped me around quite a few times," McQuoid told One News. "I think the longest for about 20 seconds."
Initially, Constable Paul Bailey of the Napier Police jumped into the water to save McQuoid. However, he soon realized that it was very difficult for him to hold on to the boy.
"A few times under the waves I was thinking, 'Have I done the right thing charging in here? Is it going to be two bodies they're looking for," Bailey told the Web site.
Without losing any time, another police officer instructed other people on the beach to form a chain from the shoreline into the water to bring McQuoid and Bailey to out to safety.
McQuoid, who initially was lifeless and unresponsive, was once again helped by fellow beach-goers who revived him before he was taken to a local hospital.
"I'd love to thank them so much for what they did. They saved my life. If it wasn't for them I'd be dead," a thankful McQuoid told One News.
"It was amazing to watch and a huge relief to see the boy brought to shore. I really think if the police had not arrived at the scene so quickly he would have drowned," one woman who watched the drama on the beach, told the web site.
