Katy Perry Allegedly Unfollows Mum Mary Hudson After Charlie Kirk Tribute Post Amid Political Differences
The apparent change has reignited attention on their long-standing political differences

Katy Perry has sparked online speculation that she unfollowed her mother, Mary Hudson, after users on X noticed that the singer's Instagram account no longer appears to follow Hudson, @maryarises. The apparent change has drawn attention amid discussion of Hudson's tribute to conservative activist Charlie Kirk, with screenshots circulating online as evidence of the alleged unfollow.
However, there is no independent evidence establishing exactly when the alleged unfollow happened. That means it cannot be confirmed that Perry unfollowed Hudson because of, or immediately after, the tribute post.

The claim gained traction on X after users noticed the apparent change. One post claimed Perry had 'unfollowed her mom' following Hudson's latest political post, while another framed the timing as a reaction to the tribute. Neither post provides evidence establishing when the Instagram change occurred.
The Instagram screenshot drew mixed reactions, with some commenters interpreting the apparent unfollow as a sign of a family disagreement over politics.
Others urged people not to assume a motive from an Instagram following list alone, pointing out that Perry has not publicly explained any change to her account.
Mary Hudson Shares Charlie Kirk Tribute
Hudson's Instagram post features a memorial graphic for Kirk, who was killed in September 2025, alongside a US flag, the Twin Towers and a Santa Barbara Courthouse event invitation.
The graphic asks people to 'pray and honour the memory of Charlie Kirk and the victims of 9/11' at a gathering at the Clock Tower at the corner of Anacapa and Anapamu streets at 10am on Friday, 11 September.
Kirk, the co-founder of conservative youth organisation Turning Point USA, was fatally shot at Utah Valley University on 10 September 2025. His death has continued to draw tributes from conservative figures and supporters, particularly around the first anniversary of his killing.
The post has since fuelled online discussion about Hudson's political views and whether they could have played a role in the alleged change to Perry's Instagram following list.
Katy Perry and Her Mum Have Different Political Views
The political contrast between Perry and her mother is not new.
According to PEOPLE, Hudson filed paperwork in 2023 to run for a seat on the Santa Barbara County Republican Central Committee. She had previously been spotted gathering signatures to qualify for the ballot and said she wanted to 'get the conservatives in there to make a difference.'
The outlet also reported that Perry revealed in 2016 that her parents had voted for Donald Trump, while she had campaigned for Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
Perry later backed Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election, appearing at Harris' Election Eve rally in Pittsburgh on 4 November and speaking about women's rights and her daughter's future.
Despite those differences, Perry and Hudson appeared together at a 2026 FIFA World Cup match on 12 June. Hudson shared photos from the United States-Paraguay match at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, including one featuring Perry.
Hudson also still appears to follow Perry on Instagram, while Perry's account does not currently appear to follow her mother.
The apparent change in Perry's following list is therefore visible, but the timing and reason for any alleged unfollow remain unconfirmed. Neither Perry nor Hudson has publicly linked the Instagram change to Hudson's Kirk tribute.
