Liam Payne's family took legal action in Argentina to restrict the online circulation of graphic photographs of the singer's body. The move is aimed at protecting his young son Bear from encountering the images in the future.

The former One Direction star died aged 31 two years ago after falling from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires on 16 October 2024. Within hours, photos purporting to show his body appeared online, triggering widespread outrage and a battle to prevent the material from continuing to spread.

Liam Payne's Family Fought To Protect Bear

According to The Mirror, Payne's family pursued legal measures in Argentina after the photos continued circulating online despite the original publisher removing them. The action reportedly involved major technology platforms, including Facebook and Google, as the family sought to restrict further sharing of the images. The move was linked to concerns that Bear could eventually encounter graphic photographs of his father online as he grew older.

'At the heart of the move was the desire to protect Liam's son Bear from being confronted with such images when he was older,' a source said. 'It was very much a sweeping clamp-down, which was very much welcomed. If you look online now, you are unable to see them, which is a huge relief.'

The legal action came after Payne's family had already endured intense media attention surrounding his death and the circumstances of his final hours.

Cheryl Warned Bear Could See the Images

Payne's former partner Cheryl, the mother of his son, publicly criticised the coverage days after his death. 'What is troubling my spirit the most is that one day Bear will have access to the abhorrent reports and media exploitation we have seen in the past two days,' she wrote on Instagram.

Cheryl said it was 'breaking my heart' that she could not protect Bear from the material in the future. 'Before you leave comments or make videos, ask yourself if you would like your own child or family to read them,' she added, while asking people to give Payne 'the little dignity he has left'.

At the time, Bear was seven years old. Payne and Cheryl had welcomed their son in March 2017 and remained connected as co-parents after their relationship ended.

How Liam Payne's Death Photos Spread Online

TMZ initially published cropped photos said to show parts of Payne's body shortly after his death. The outlet later removed the photos and amended its report, but copies and screenshots kept circulating on social media and other websites.

The controversy became part of a wider debate about how Payne's death was covered in digital spaces. Fans reported encountering misleading videos and unverified material falsely presented as his final moments.

What Happened to Liam Payne?

Payne died after falling from the third-floor balcony of the CasaSur Palermo Hotel in Buenos Aires. His death prompted an investigation in Argentina, while his father Geoff travelled to the country to identify his son's body and arrange for its repatriation.

As previously reported, witness accounts have provided further details about the late singer's erratic behaviour in the hours before his death, while investigators examined CCTV footage, emergency calls and other evidence surrounding the circumstances of the fall.

For Payne's family, however, the fallout from his death has continued beyond the initial investigation, with the focus now on preventing his son from encountering graphic images of his father online as he grows older.
