A court in London has heard about how a man intentionally changed his WhatsApp profile picture to contain a naked image of his ex-girlfriend as part of an act of a revenge scheme.

Jamel Armstrong, 27, was appearing at Croydon Magistrates Court when it was revealed that after an argument over the phone with his then-girlfriend, he changed his profile picture, as well as sending her a video of her performing a sexual act on him.

The Metro reported that in court, prosecutor Maria Slater said that on the 12 October, the unnamed victim was with a friend when she decided to call Armstrong to see how he was.

When the conversation became heated, he threatened to post naked images of her onto Instagram.

Slater said: "She hung up the phone and she saw the defendant had changed his WhatsApp profile picture to a picture of her. Her friend called and said to change the picture.

"They saw him change the picture again to another picture of her, and then change a third time. 'The friend sent a message saying 'you're going to f***ing prison' and 'you're a f***ing prick.

"The victim called the police and the police saw screenshots of the WhatsApp conversation and one of the incriminating profile pictures.

"Officers viewed the video and identified the victim."

On the 25 October, Armstrong was arrested, searched and placed into custody.

A joint of cannabis was found on him, which he told police he was smoking shortly before his arrest.

Defending him Kath Jatter said: "'I think it would be agreed by everyone in the court including the defendant this is a mean and shabby offence that would have caused the complainant great distress.

"They weren't shared publicly, not in a public forum, it was in a WhatsApp chat. The male cousin was the only recipient of this."

Armstrong, of Chertsey Crescent, New Addington,, admitted to possession of a Class B drug as well as one count of disclosure of sexual photographs and films with intent to cause distress.

Sentencing was adjourned until 23 November.
