Manuel Pellegrini starts his reign as Manchester City manager as his side host Newcastle United at the Etihad. The fixture will see both clubs kick-start their 2013/14 Premier League campaign on Monday evening.

Overview

City come into this game after their 3-1 friendly defeat to Arsenal last week, despite maintaining possession for the most part of the game. Theo Walcott, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud scored for the Gunners while summer addition Alvaro Negredo netted the only goal for the Citizens.

The defeat against Arsene Wenger's side was City's second straight defeat after losing an earlier friendly fixture 2-1 to Champions League and Bundesliga winners Bayern Munich.

The Etihad club have bought new faces to the club, signing Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Negredo and Stevan Jovetic. With two defeats, Pellegrini would be banking on his side to start with a victory as their rivals, Manchester United (4-1 to Swansea) and Chelsea (2-0 to Hull) have started with a victory.

Meanwhile, Alan Pardew will be hoping for his side to avoid last season's poor run, which saw Newcastle avoid relegation after finishing 16th in the league table. The visitors enter this game after 1-1 draw over the Portuguese side Sporting Braga.

The Magpies suffered a 4-0 defeat against City at the Etihad during the previous season and Pardew will be hoping for an upset on Monday evening. Newcastle have failed to attract players this summer, adding Olivier Kemen and Loic Remy on loan from Queens Park Rangers to their squad.

Pellegrini: "Now we have a new era with some new players. Of course, the new players, and the manager and staff, all need time to get to know each other and I'm sure that we will improve as the season progresses - but we do not have that time. We have to hit the ground running and that starts against Newcastle."

Pardew: "City have invested heavily again and obviously they will be one of the top contenders for the title, so it is going to be a tough game but it is one we are more than ready for. It's a psychological game for us in terms of putting ourselves in the minds of everybody with a really strong performance and hopefully we'll get some points out of it."
