Manchester United 0-0 Newcastle United; Barclays Premier League as it happened
Smalling hits the post! Memphis' corner finds the big centre half who nods down towards the bottom corner, only to be denied by the wood work. Newcastle break straight away and it is three on two in their advantage. Cisse dances across Blind and drags a shot across the face of goal, just missing the far post.
Schneiderlin does wonderfully well to intercept in his own half before springing forward and curling a ball through for Rooney down the inside left. He curls one in towards the far post where Mata is running into space but the Spaniard can't keep his volley down and lumps an effort well over the bar.
It's end to end stuff now. After that Newcastle chance, United are on the attack again with Memphis, who takes it around Krul but is forced too wide to shoot himself after a poor first touch. He tries to cut it back to Mata inside the six yard area but Mbemba makes an important sliding interception.
Louis van Gaal speaking to BT Sport.
I have to build him [Schweinsteiger] up. When you want to play him more for than 45 minutes you have to start with him.
"Everybody is saying he is a world champion and he has won a lot of things but every player has to prove that. To do that for Manchester United is not so easy but I have great confidence in him.
"I want to spare Michael Carrick for other matches. Last year he was very much injured and I want to prevent that."
After being booked within two minutes of each of his appearances of the bench for Newcastle, Mitrovic is given his first full start by Steve McClaren today. It's an interesting selection; Daley Blind was widely praised for his performance at centre half against Villa last week but the aerial power of the hot-headed Serbian is likely to provide a much sterner test.
Elsewhere for the visiting side, Steven Taylor comes in for the suspended Janmaat while Moussa Sissoko misses out due to injury. New signing Florian Thauvin settles for a spot on the bench.
So Michael Carrick, who was at the epicentre of everything Manchester United did right last season, drops to the bench after a less than convincing display against Club Brugge last Tuesday. That hands a full debut to Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has brought an element of control to this United side in each of his last two appearances from the bench.
Elsewhere, Adnan Januzaj retains his place after his winner in United's Premier League outing, while Memphis Depay's outstanding double against Club Brugge ensures he is going nowhere.
Ander Herrera's exile to the bench continues.
Manchester United haven't been at their sparkling best in these opening two games of the season but their formidable record against Newcastle United at this ground will have them feeling confident. The Magpies have won just once at Old Trafford in the Premier League era, a 1-0 victory in December 2013 during David Moyes' reign in charge.
Official line ups will be with us in about five minutes.
Manchester United team news:
Marouane Fellaini will serve the last of his three match suspension today while Phil Jones is still recovering from a bout of thrombosis. As Louis van Gaal hinted in his press conference this week, Bastian Schweinsteiger could make his first start for the club, having come off the bench in their first three games this term.
