Market round-up: FTSE 100 investors turn to grocers and reject mines ahead of Greek debt talks
Dipping again on 26 June, the FTSE 100 ended lower than where it began the week. Investors were grinding their gears as Greek politicians and their creditors prepared for weekend negotiations to break the deadlock over a bailout for the country.
Supermarkets were again on the up. "Tesco flew following its latest sales figures with sector rivals Sainsbury's and Morrisons basking in the reflected glow," according to AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould. The company hit the top of the biggest risers leaderboard with a +2.71% gain in share price.
But Tesco warned that "the market is still challenging and volatility is likely to remain a feature of short-term performance", said Mould. He added: "But the latest figures are another step in the right direction."
The FTSE 100 closed at 6,753.70, down -0.79%. But this was a cut from where it began the week at 6,825.67p on 22 June.
After gaining favour earlier in the week, investors' opinion of mines as a good place to weather the Greek storm waned and Glencore, BHP Billiton and Anglo American became some of the biggest fallers on the FTSE 100.
