Market round-up: FTSE 100 not out of the woods, falls on low investor confidence

The FTSE sank Wednesday after making a slight recovery from losing £74bn ($114.5bn) in value in a single day of trading Monday. Fears remain over China's economic slowdown after bargain hunters tried to scoop up deals Tuesday.

"China's interest rate cut brought a temporary respite but nervous traders clearly see it as a little more than putting a sticking plaster on a gaping wound in the absence of concrete economic data," said AJ Bell Investment Director Russ Mould.

Overall the market lost -1.68% to settle at 5,979.20p. International Consolidated Airlines Group rose to the top of the market gaining +2.61%.

Mould saw value in the UK's betting industry where "is set to continue with Paddy Power and Betfair agreeing to tie the knot. The combined group would be the UK's online market leader, ahead of a merged Ladbrokes/Coral, William Hill and Bet365".

Herencia Resources was a double-digit riser after it reported more widespread high grade results at its Picachos copper project in central Chile. A number of the new areas sampled lie within the proposed Picachos open pit.
