Market round-up: FTSE 100 sees BP shares soar after Deepwater Horizon settlement deal
After days of gains on the FTSE 100, the market pulled back on 2 July barely budging from where it closed the day before.
"Another bout of sparring between Merkel and Tsipras has left Greece and the markets playing a waiting game as talks come to a halt, with Greek Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis vowing to step aside if voters back austerity," says AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould. A referendum on whether Greeks will accept or reject a bailout deal is planned for 5 July.
Oil and gas giant BP made whopping gains despite the lull, rising +4.35% following an announcement that it will pay $18.7bn (£11.9bn, €16.8bn) to fully settle 2010 Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Horizon oil spill claims.
"Back in London, Dixons Carphone particularly stood out among the top-tier risers having teamed up with American mobile network giant Sprint with a view to opening and managing Sprint-branded stores in the US," said Mould.
Overall the market nudged ahead to close 0.33% higher at 6,630.47 after gaining 1.34% on 1 July.
