A New Kind of Pervert? 'The Fappening' Proves Revenge Porn Culture is Thriving

Unless you have been living under a rock, you will be aware of the celebrity nude leak scandal that exposed intimate, private photos of Hunger Games star Jennifer Lawrence and some of the world's most famous women.

Thanks to a drive known as "The Fappening", there are currently scores of images, believed to have been stolen from Apple's iCloud storage systems of these innocent ladies in various states of undress, doing the rounds on the internet.

With the just a few clicks, millions of voyeurs can see these explicit images of women.

The phrase "Fappening" is a combination of "happening" and the slang term "fapping", meaning masturbation.

Much like the revenge porn sub-culture - whereby a jilted ex decides to humiliate you by publically sharing an inmate video, sex tape or nude picture - this new form of non-consensual pornography should also be condemned.

As one Reddit user rightly put it: "Just because someone took you there doesn't mean you get to look through someone's f---ing windows."

Reducing the largest celebrity nude hack in history to nothing more than a catchy sexual moniker trivialises this abhorrent issue.

The victims of this extreme invasion of privacy will no doubt be subjected to public shaming, ridicule and will be taken apart on public forums, social media and websites - one blemish, trace of cellulite and love handle at a time. Let's not even start with the filthy comments, the sexual innuendo and the distasteful "banter" that will continue long after the crime has been committed.

While these celebrities may have millions in the bank, they are no less human.

Their status cannot protect them from the irreversible physical and emotional harm that having their private moments turned into sexual entertainment for strangers could cause. Even a $500 an hour physiatrist to the stars can't fix these types of problems.

It doesn't help that Pirate Bay torrent site, championed as an internet crusader is hosting torrent files that help downloaders access the database of hundreds of nude photos of Lawrence and co.

The emergence of "The Fappening" is proof that the revenge porn subculture has evolved into a new type of pervert: this internet fiend doesn't have broken heart or a grudge, but simply wants its victims to suffer in the name of entertainment.
