American long-distance swimmer Diana Nyad finally accomplished her dream of swimming from Cuba to Florida. The 64-year-old swimmer had attempted the 110-mile (166km) swim four times but was held back by poor weather and painful jelly fish stings. It took 53 hours to complete and required a prosthetic silicone mask and a team of kayakers to look out for sharks.

Kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro was found dead in his prison cell after he hanged himself with a sheet. The 53-year-old was serving a life sentence without parole plus 1,000 years after admitting to 937 counts of rape, kidnapping and murder.
