Nick Kyrgios in hot water, ATP unimpressed with tennis star's allegations
Australian professional tennis player Nick Kyrgios has been slapped with a fine and might face a ban after calling ATP "pretty corrupt".
After being fined £93k ($113k), Nick Kyrgios stated that he did not expect anything better from the "pretty corrupt" Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP). Kyrgios was fined for his rampage against umpire Fergus Murphy during a recent Masters 1000 event. In an interview after his first US Open match, Kyrgios made the situation worse by calling the ATP corrupt. ATP is now considering a match ban, which might see Kyrgios out of the US Open.
Kyrgios, ranked world no. 30, threw a massive temper tantrum during his Cincinnati Masters match against world no. 9 Karen Khachanov. Kyrgios complained that the umpire, Murphy, had been "doing some stupid s**t every time I play." Cameras caught Kyrgios' disrespectful behaviour on the court. The Australian was observed loudly calling the umpire a "f***ing tool" and asking for a toilet break to go break rackets.
Kyrgios blamed his loss to Khachanov on Murphy being "the worst f***ing referee ever." This rampage landed the Aussie a hefty fine.
Even after paying the fine, Kyrgios remains unrepentant. After his US Open win against Steve Johnson, Kyrgios landed himself in more trouble. The Mirror reports that when asked about the fine Kyrgios said: "The ATP is pretty corrupt anyway. I'm not fussed about it at all." ATP gave Kyrgios the green signal to play the US Open but in light of the corruption accusations, the ATP might proceed to ban Kyrgios from playing.
If Kyrgios gets banned, it will be the second time he lands himself in the same position. After tanking in Shanghai back in 2016, Kyrgios was banned and had to attend mandated counselling.
Kyrgios' disrespect is not limited to umpires and opponents. ESPN shared details of a fan tweet which recorded Kyrgios wiping his sweaty body and spitting into the towel before throwing it to a fan.
Even though the US Open is independent of the ATP, if the ATP chooses to ban Kyrgios, the United States Tennis Association will abide by the ban. ATP is investigating Kyrgios' claim of corruption at the same time they are looking into his behaviour to see if any further action is warranted.
