Overview
World No 1 Djokovic's road to the final of the US Open final has been a strange one, being a beneficiary of a walkover and two retirements. For the first five rounds of the tournament, he played only two complete matches.
The Serb comes into the final after a 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win over Gael Monfils in the semi-final, inflicting the thirteenth defeat on him. What could be of concern to the 29-year-old is his fitness, as he needed multiple changeover treatments for his left shoulder, then a medical timeout for his right shoulder during the game.
Djokovic has insisted that there are no medical worries and that he is fit to play in the final, but there are doubts as to whether he will register a win and secure his third US Open title.
Wawrinka comes into this game on the back of a gruelling 4-6, 7-5, 6-4, 6-2 victory over fifth seed Kei Nishikori in the semi-final. At the start, it looked like the Swiss international was on his way back home, losing the first set but then he fought back to eventually win the tie.
Wawrinka has played 23 sets to reach the final and Djokovic just 14, showing the contrasting tournaments they have had, with Wawrinka admitting that it is tough to keep the intensity going in such humid conditions.
The 31-year-old has a good record at the US Open, having reached the semi-final at New York in two of the past three years.
