One female police officer killed
A female police officer has been shot dead and her female colleague critically injured during the arrest of a murder suspect in Manchester this morning. Both officers were unarmed. They were after a man, named Dale Cregan, who police had been hunting for several weeks. Cregan was wanted over separate gun and grenade attacks that killed a father and son. A witness close to the scene of the arrest told reporters that they heard 13 gunshot.
Assistant Chief Constable of Greater Manchester Police, Gary Shewan, has released this statement this morning, saying: 'This is a tragic day for the whole force.'
The constabulary released this CCTV footage of what they believed was the moment Dale Cregan (seen here) and another man, Anthony Wilkinson, carried out the attack. Both Wilkinson and Cregan were wanted in connection with two murders: Mark Short was shot and killed at a pub in Manchester back in May. His father, David Short, was found with gunshots to his body after a blast at the house, where the grenade was thrown. Wilkinson was arrested two weeks ago, he's since been charged with murder and attempted murder.
