OpTrump: Anonymous releases Donald Trump's Social Security number ahead of 1 April attack
Hackers associated with Anonymous have released the alleged Social Security number and other personal information of Republican presidential front runner Donald Trump. The details, including mobile phone number and address, were part of the first waves of attack in the declared "war on Trump".
A Twitter account associated with Anonymous tweeted about the release and called on supporters to stay tuned to what is to come. On 14 March, the hacktivist collection warned it would relaunch its cyber operations against Trump on 1 April and said it would "dismantle his campaign".
Anonymous officially "declared war" on the bombastic real estate mogul in December 2015 after he proposed banning Muslims from entering the US. The previous operation resulted in hackers targeting a number of websites. The renewed effort against Trump — dubbed #OpTrump — was announced in a video statement that called out his "inconsistent and hateful campaign".
The activists said: "Dear Donald Trump, we have been watching you for a long time and what we see is deeply disturbing. Your inconsistent and hateful campaign has not only shocked the United States of America [but] you have shocked the entire planet with your appalling actions and ideas. You say what your audience wants to hear but in reality you don't stand for anything except for your personal greed and power."
The video referred to the operation as a "call to arms" for hactivists, with Anonymous asking supporters to shut down Trump's websites and "to research and expose what he doesn't want the public to know. We need to dismantle his campaign and sabotage his brand."
Earlier in the week, Anonymous also released what it referred to as "phase one" of #OpTrump, voicemails left on Trump's phone by members of the media, sports stars and boxing promotors. However, Trump is not the only candidate being targeted. The same Twitter account warned, "You're next Hillary. #TotalAnarchy".
