Osama bin Laden: Unseen images of al-Qaeda founder in Afghanistan emerge
New images of Osama bin Laden hiding out in the Tora Bora region of Afghanistan have been made public for the first time. They were taken by photojournalist Abdel Bari Atwan in 1996.
Atwan was invited to Bin Laden's hideout to meet and interview him. Atwan said when he met Bin Laden, the man was "very modest" and "very humble" and "genuine in what he believed".
The photos show Bin Laden taking walks in the mountains, spending time in his hideout surrounded by guns and texts and making video recordings.
The stills were originally part of US Attorney's Office evidence against an al-Qaeda lieutenant called Khalid al-Fawwaz who was convicted in February of conspiring with the militant organisation in the 1990s.
