Jones Calm Over Manchester United's Slow Transfer Window

Manchester United defender Phil Jones is unfazed by Chelsea and Manchester City's swift spending during the summer transfer window insisting the business of other clubs is of no concern to the Premier League champions.

While David Moyes' side remain in the chase for Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas, the club's only incoming transfer deal so far this summer has been in the form of 20-year-old Uruguayan full back Guillermo Varela, who looks set to return to South America on a loan deal to join Boca Juniors.

Meanwhile, Chelsea and City have flexed their financial muscles after seeing United ease to their 20<sup>th Premier League crown last season. On his return to Stamford Bridge Jose Mourinho has been joined by Germany international Andre Schurrle, former FC Twente midfielder Marco Van Ginkel, goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer and most recently Chilean youngster Cristian Cuevas.

City's spending is approaching £87m after the acquisitions of Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Alvaro Negredo and Stevan Jovetic in a spree that has refreshed their forward line.

While the world waits for United's next step, Jones insists there is no panic over incoming deals at Old Trafford.

"I don't think the lads are too bothered who the players are that other teams are signing," Jones said, speaking after United's 3-2 defeat to Yokohama F Marinos as part of their Far East tour.

"It's totally irrelevant, we're just concentrating on ourselves and we know what to do."

In addition to Fabregas, United remain closely linked with bids for Marouane Fellaini and Benfica centre half Ezequiel Garay, with a reported €20m deal in place for the Argentine defender.

With Rio Ferdinand, Nemanja Vidic, Jonny Evans and Chris Smalling already contesting for a spot in Moyes' central defence, the arrival of Garay could make life even more difficult for Jones, who has every intention of claiming the position as his own.

"Yes of course, there's no hiding it," Jones added, the Guardian report. "I've said all along from one centre back is the position I feel most comfortable in but if I'm asked to play right back or midfield I'll go and do a job there."
