Real Madrid and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo wins Ballon d'Or 2016: Twitter reactions
Ronaldo won the Champions League with Real and the Euro 2016 with Portugal.
Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo was successful in beating Barcelona's Lionel Messi to win the Ballon d'Or 2016 on 12 December.
The 31-year-old was instrumental in helping Real win the Champions League for the record 11<sup>th time. He scored the winning penalty in the Champions League final shootout against Atletico Madrid that saw him achieving the second European triumph in three years.
Ronaldo continued that form into the Euro 2016 as Portugal defeated France to win the European championship, which was the country's first piece of major silverware. The Ballon d'Or that he won on Monday was his fourth and he is now one short of Messi, who is the current record holder.
Real star forward has won three with his current employers, while he bagged his first Ballon d'Or with Manchester United in 2008.
France Football and Fifa's best player of the year award was merged and named as Fifa Ballon d'Or from 2010 to 2015. However, France Football ended their partnership with the sport's governing body and will be called as Ballon d'Or.
