Robert Mugabe sends peacekeepers to monitor US election: Top ten #Nov8AfricanEdition tweets
Social media users trigger sarcastic discussion on presidential election if the US was an African country.
Dozens of Twitter users have been posting sarcastic comments in the lead-up to the US presidential election, held on 8 November. Under the hashtag #Nov8AfricanEdition, people are posting comments typically made in reference to elections in Africa, triggering discussions on the vote if the US was an African country.
The US election sees Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton running against Republican candidate Donald Trump.
It is believed the hashtag was created by Nigerian social media user and blogger Gidimiester in October, after Trump claimed he might not accept the election result if Clinton won.
The hashtag came at a time when presidential elections have been marred by violence, arrests and a crackdown on freedom of speech in some African countries including Burundi, Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and The Gambia.
As millions of people in the US are heading to the polls , IBTimes UK has compiled a list of the best #Nov8AfricanEdition tweets.
