Samsung event invitation
The invitation includes the outline of a smartphone and the S Pen stylus, unique to the Note range Samsung

Samsung is holding a media event in New York today, 23 August, where it is widely expected to reveal the new Galaxy Note 8 smartphone.

The event will follow the company's traditional Samsung Unpacked format, where a new device will be revealed to the media and analysts, before attendees get to experience it for themselves in a demonstration area.

Samsung describes the event as the launch of its latest flagship, and with the Galaxy S8 still relatively new - and the S Pen stylus appearing on event invitations - the entire industry is expecting an update to the doomed Note 7, which was pulled from sale a year ago due to exploding batteries.

Rumours and leaks, including one on Samsung's own websites just days before the launch, suggest the Note 8 will have a screen slightly larger than six inches, a similar 'Infinity Display' design as the Galaxy S8, the familiar S Pen stylus, and an all-new, dual-lens rear camera.

The event is being held in New York City and there will be a live video stream to watch from home. Samsung.com is the place to go at 11am local time (8am PST; 4pm BST). Alternatively, Samsung often hosts live streams on its YouTube page, too.

If the Note 8 is indeed launched today, we can expect to see the new handset in stores early next month. Prices aren't yet known, but rumours claim it will be in the region of €1,000 (£920), making it one of the most expensive phones on the market.
